Hello I have just seen your very interesting website.

I have a Wolseley Webb (UK) rotavator I am trying to get spares for, on the
machine plate it says TITAN Serial Number 370. Model Number is AC3484.Next
to this is another no' 001069. It is a 5HP briggs stratton engine 4 cycle,
206cc. it also says I/C seriesengine equipped with features for
industrial/commercial use. I cannot see any briggs & stratton engine numbers
so am having difficulty trying to get spares.

Is there any chance any member might know what the engine no is or where on the
engine it would be marked I have looked in all the obvious places. the
rotavator must be at least 15 years old. I have some photos if this would
help identify the engine.

I think that the numbers are on the cowling that goes from the flywheel fan to the cylinder. I'll have to go down to the bottom of the garden to check on my machine. Clive, who is all knowledgeable on these matters, will hopefully let you know soon.

I would likewise expect the engine numbers to be on the cowling tinwork as is the norm'..they will be actually stamped into the tinwork. They are often quite hard to read on older machines if either some rusting has occured or if a thick coat of paint has been added...but they will be there.
The only time when they will be missing is if a new cowling has been fitted...these spares cowlings came in plain grey primer rather than original engine colour and then had a foil sticker to scribe numbers into...or things can get blurred if a cowling from another engine has been fitted..then of course it will have numbers ..but the wrong ones.!!

...on some I think the numbers were on the vertical side of the tinwork on the side facing the carb.

They will be in 3 sections Model, Type, Code

Once you have tracked them down they are the key to everything. You can download an operators manual from www.briggsandstratton.com and also the full engine parts list..the very same one that a machinery agent will have.
They even provide the date of manufacture of the engine....the last set, Code, read year/month/day/factory.

Your model of Titan is within the last design style of UK Merry Tiller...these came out in c.1983 and I have a reference to them finishing in 1989??. Titan seems to be listed as AC3484 up to about 1986 then seems to change to W25021.

Out of curiosity the last price ref I have for this Titan model is in July 1989 when it was shown as £895 inc' vat.

If you visit this site; http://merrytiller.dyndns.org/ there are some parts diagrams and operating manual some of which suit your Titan model. Look under the Major link at the top of the page as these are the ones for your design type. The Titan shown lower down the page is for a previous use of the Titan name..in the same way as car manufacturers re use model names.

..and finally ..I had a rummage and found a brochure which I think may be from 1984 and by chance it does list an engine model type which was used then..Model 131232.

However do track down the actual numbers from your engine to ensure getting The correct parts.

Thank you John & Clive for your speedy replies, thought I had looked everywhere
then I took off starter rope guard gave it a bit of a clean then saw the
numbers stamped on the cover so I need'nt have taken it all apart. The numbers are Model 131232 Type no 0236 01 & the Code no 82121607. I have given these for
future reference as it might come in handy for others looking for this info. Same number as you came up with Clive. Also the dyndns site was very useful as I downloaded the manual.

Pleased you found the numbers ok in the end...I thought they must be lurking somewhere on the cowling tinwork.

The numbering system is quite fascinating as shown in this link...with all numbers having a definite link to engine build and fitments etc.

...and whilst the general Model number can give a good clue for basic spares ordering it is always best to go with the actual numbers from individual engines as some items can be very specific to that engine.

All good garden machinery sales/service agents should have no problem in sourcing any B&S spares you require...a large proportion of regular consumable spares will more than likely be in stock items.
