creepy crawlies on acer

went to a friends today her acer trunk is covered in creepy crawlies like grey hardbacks
not really sure what they are
they are about half a centimetre long grey/fawn in colour like those grey insects that curl up into a ball but smaller
any ideas?
will they harm her tree?
