The pong of banana skins

Does anybody else suffer from my problem? I have a kitchen waste collection pot in which I accumulate all my peelings to chuck on the compost heap. But whenever I put in banana skins, within an hour they start to emit a pong which stinks the kitchen out. Short of putting the banana skins straight onto the heap, is there any way of stopping the smell?

Not that I know of. I either put them straight on the heap or stick them underneath my roses, they love the potassium.

I often add banana skins to the kitchen caddy and have never noticed a smell at all :? What sort of pong?

It's not exactly a poo type of pong, but definitely whiffy, as if there's some kind of rotting. Maybe it's the heat building up in the lidded caddy which is encouraging bacteria to start breeding.

Yes, I've worked with people who couldn't stand the smell of a banana skin in the bin near their desk

Definite pong, even my disabled nose can smell it, but I can't describe it.
