I'm growing mouli for the first time this year. The ones I have bought in Indian shops are normally about 18 inches long but I imagine these are grown commercially in special conditions. Can anybody tell me how long I can expect my roots to grow in normal outside conditions.

I grew some last year that was so big I could hardly get it out of the ground. I don't think it made 18 inches but I didn't water it and it was a very hot summer. With some manure and water I doubt I'd have got them out of the floor at all!
