Chicken Manure Ash

On a field near me a man was spreading very finely ash that he told me was from power stations that burn chicken manure as fuel. He gave me some and said only spread it thinly as it is very strong, I would have thought that this was not a very eficient fuel for power stations, perhaps some one could enlighten me, but more importantly has anyone any experience of the benifits of this ash and its aplication . It was being spread on a field where potatoes will eventually be planted. I await a reply with interest.

Hello Brenjon
At a guess I would say that its main use is probably as a source of calcium, magnesium, phosphorus with possibly some potassium. If see your man again ask him if he has any of the bags that this stuff comes in as they should have an analysis printed on them.

I'd never heard of this before, but apparently it's not as strange as it may seem. The Dutch have a big problem with all kinds of manure. And I find the canny Scots have it sorted:-

Hi Brenjon,
I have been using this for the last two years from a local incinerator. The application should be in the region of 50grams per square metre for general use.
Because this is not a refined product when it is delivered there is no chemical analysis. The reason that it is burnt is to burn off the obnoxious gasses that exist in the medium and turn into electricity.
I believe the Dutch have had great difficulties with Pigs manure and I read somewhere that they now treat it with Limestone and the result is usable fertilizer and the limestone has miraculously become Gypsum.
This in turn is made into plasterboard which is used in the building trades.
What bugs me is that we always hear about the terrible problems, because they are newsworthy, and never hear about the way scientists have resolved these terrible problems. There are so many things that are occurring and we are kept in total ignorance. I feel this is a great pity.
JB.

Alan and Johnboy. Do you two never sleep? I spotted the time when you were posting your responses and am ashamed to say I was still in bed snoring my head off.

When I did a posting this afternoon it came up in the old/winter time as well, OH. thinks you have to change the time yourself, I don't think so as I have just checked the time on my computer and it was the correct time and I hadn't changed it.

OH. To change the time if yours is the same as mine, double click on computer, then control panel, then day and date and follow the arrows up or down, I maybe telling my grandmother how to suck eggs, if so I apologize.
