given I'm likely to be spending a goodly amount of time in the cold (brrrrr) I could do with some recommendations on warm clothing!
I rather like the idea of moleskin troosers - I think jeans might be too unwieldy, and they're grim if they get wet!
At home I tend to wear several layers, so that I can peel them orf like an onion as I work up a gentle glow!
What do you chaps wear?

Dear Lynne, i must admit i'm a jean man, and also lots of layers on top. But i would not be without a pair of waterproofs for the odd occasion that we get a wet day in the winter.
And a good comfortable pair of work boots, mine are toetectors and i think it is wise to have these.
And you might want a pair of knee pads too.

Moleskin can also be horrid when they get wet, when working outside in the wet the best thing I ever bought was gore-tex over trousers from the army surplus supplies these breath so you dont end up just as wet from overheating like some of the cheaper water proofs, handy for wearing in the summer when doing the strimming stops you getting green legs.

I wear army surplus trousers in the colder months - german or dutch are best - the latter quite smart - the other half wears them too. - you can often get them new for about £20. In summer, shorts or Regatta 'Action trousers'.

Recently I bought a pair of work trousers with a pocket to place knee pads in - they are brilliant although a bit pricey.

If thermals needed (rare for me, although Ruth wears them moost of winter), silk is best, and not too expensive - £20 for long johns.

Waterproof wise, I have settled on ex nato German goretex (breathable and tough) jackets and trousers for the last seven years. Originally grey/olive, the more recent type are 'flecktarn' camouflage though (Yuk). Ebay has them, but best to see before you buy. On my head I wear a cap, plus a green sou'wester with strap/spring toggle in heavy rain or wind - don't like hoods.

Aldi do a good range of outdoor trousers including waterproof over trousers and thermal trousers also micro fleeces all at a good price my hubby teaches Outdoor education and is outdoors all year round and he wears them they have a good range of boots too but you have to watch for the special offers I get emails twice a week so I can choose when to shop

I bet he doesn't allow his pupils to be so protected, does he?!

actually we provide a full set of waterproofs a fleece sweater hats and gloves plus boots and wellies so the parents don't have to pay out for things that might never get worn again !

Having got blinkin freezing this morning in my fingers, what does everyone else use to keep them from dropping orf?

fingerless mittens ! my Dad was a postman and he always wore them he also used to say if your wrists are warm your hands are too ! but he always had cracked finger ends which sometimes happens to me as I don't like gloves Snowfire helps the healing all natural it is actually for chilbains but great for anything my son is a soldier and he always has snowfire with him too !

I wear Winter Balers and Summer Balers purchased from my local Agricultural Merchants.
Winter Balers are lined green working trousers and Summer Balers are normal green working trousers.
I suspect that these are produced for men only in mind without even a hint of fashion. I would imagine that the smaller sizes would suit females.
I'm trying to say this without seeming sexist.
But to put it another way if you were pregnant my trousers would be perfect for you.
I used to wear an all-in-one thermal suit which came from the USA but after only two purchases the supply dried up and I could never find them any more.
I tried thermal long johns but I found that I would have the knees out of them in half a season so switched to the Balers several years ago.
Seriously I feel that you may be able to utilize the smaller sizes of Baler. They are exceedingly warm.

Is that what's known as 'combinations'? It's my ambition to get some of these so I'm disappointed to hear they aren't available.


I fancy a pair of pink ones they can sew me into in October and cut me out of in May. As it is I'll have to make do with my longjohns, which are the greatest invention known to man.

We used to live on the North Yorkshire moors and I have vivid memories of Mama living in Damart thermal stuff from October through to April!

We get all in one fleece suits from Daleswear at Ingleton Hubby wears his for caving amongst other things mine known as my babygrow is to keep me cosy after a bath !

The Asst.Est.Mgr goes caving and his furry suit also came from Daleswear!

I should have said that on a warmish day I found that Thermals cling and that is how the knees got knackered because they didn't move the same as the trousers but with the Balers the problem doesn't arise.
