Your strawbs should be fine, very hardy and can tolerate staying out all year round. If you are worried about your spuds wrap them up in fleece, or even a black bin bag over the top packed out with scrunched up newspaper / straw etc, or stick em in a shed or greenhouse. I have nothing out that is delicate so I wont take nay precuations!!

It has turned very cold this afternoon...started off in shirtsleeves and by four o'clock I had to put on a bodywarmer...and I was digging

We were forking around 7 tons of manure over the fence (which can't be removed temporarily, in case you were wondering) and INTO a viciously cold north-westerly wind which blew all the dry bits of straw back into our faces, not at all funny. The farmer wanted it off the field, hence the hurry. But at least it's done and we certainly didn't feel cold in spite of the wind! The manure can "stew" now to be used next winter.

Oops, forgot to reply to the original answer again: I am going to bring the chitting potatoes from the cold greenhouse into the house overnight and cover everything else (seedling onions, seedling leeks, fuchsias, etc) with two layers of bubble wrap. At the moment we are storing two 100l bales of potting compost and two growbags in the greenhouse so, IF the sun shines during the day, they should store quite a lot of warmth and give it out slowly overnight. We do have an oil-filled electric heater, but it's very expensive to run and I try not to use that until the spring sowing is really under way, say end of April.

Should be a bit milder her in tropical somerset but still a couple of degrees of frost are forecast and the northerly winds are already biting, the one day i got off to work on the plot is Sunday, but I think I will leave first early sowing on open ground for another week. We shouldn't be surprised at the forecast it' not at all unusual is it?
