Help!

I love this potato and have purchased some from unwins via my local garden centre that are curently chitting . The problem I have is I have just rec'd my allotment newsletter which advised that there is a serious problem with the seed potato and that it has had its certification removed. It goes on to say that any you have should be destroyed. Does anyone know if this is true /any more info on this

Kindest regards Linzi

Hi Linzi,
The answer is I do not know if it is correct but before you destroy anything I would want more proof than a flimsy note stuck up on an allotment notice board or in a newsletter.
I will make some enquiries on your behalf on the morrow.
To me it simply doesn't ring true.
JB.

Hi Linzi
Would that apply to any part of the country?, we have bought accent for the first time, as they were the only early seed spuds that our local centre had and we are in the West Midlands

Hi Bren

I'm sorry but I'm not sure. Ive tried to do some "digging" today if you'll excuse the pun..lol Although I cant find them on Unwins internet site for sale, they are on several others with no mention of any problems. I even looked on the european potato register and no mention. However I have been told by the gentleman that runs our trading hut that they were not able to obtain any for sale as a result of a problem and were given the advice to destroy any they might already have. I spose it could be just a problem with that particular supplier. Am hoping to shed some light on this and will keep you posted..

Try asking Alan Romans. He should know.

I contacted Alan Romans and he hasnt heard anything although said that he had ordered some english accent and the delivery never arrived and he has subbed with Lady Crystl. He has said he will keep ear to ground and let me know if he hears anything.

Anyone got any other ideas?

Hi Linzi,
This is the reply that I got from
Edwin Tuckers Seeds.

***

We have not heard of any problem with Accent.
We are intigued to know your source and a bit of background to your comment.
Our Accent was all English certified this year, both organic and non organic,
therefore certified directly through DEFRA.
As we cannot find a record of you purchasing Accent from us our comment cannot be
directly atributed to any other batch of seed bought elsewhere.
We will get back to you if anything further comes to light.
Yours
Geoff Penton

I think that as Alan Roman comes up with a very simiar result then we can say that what is written in you literature is totally incorrect. so plant away, when the time comes.
I also searched DEFRA website and found nothing.

Many thanks JB

I have also contacted Unwins and am awaiting their reply. I will also try to track down the buyer for the allotment association to ask for some more info on who spoke to them etc.

In the meantime the accent continue to chit quite happily and unless I can find any other reason why I shouldnt plant them they will in a couple of weeks or so be planted in my plot!!

kindest regards Linzi

Hi Linzi,
It would be interesting if you could find out why the warning was posted in your newsletter in the first place. I do feel that you should find out a little bit more information if you can manage to gather it. Find out who actually gave the magazine the information.
These things can get out of hand by rooftop rhetoric.
Just think if you had not had the sense to query it you would have possibly thrown them in the bin.
Should anything be untoward about Accent then I feel confident that DEFRA would have informed the Seed Houses as a first priority.
Hope you have a wonderful crop!!
JB.

Hi Linzi

Have you tried contacting Kings seeds as they have a discount deal with all the members of NSALG and they may well have come from there.

Well I've just spoken to the purchaser for our allotment store and he says he was advised by Warricks back in the autumn that accent had had its certification removed and that it could be about 4 yrs before it is back on the market. They didnt however give an explanation as to why it had lost its certification.

Will keep checking.

If anyone sees it in garden centres could they please jot down the name of the supplier so I can getin touch with them.

Many thanks Linzi
