Visiting the lottie this weekend and my early carrot bed was awry! Having prepared the soil I covered it with blue hoops and poythene to warm the soil in Jan, and, before the cold snap, sowed a selection of earlies and a few parsnips. For a trial this year I replaced the blue hoops after sowing with 'wendy house' plastic canes and joints to give vertical uprights so that I could later replace the polythene with fleece once germination had taken place.
I overlooked that vertical sides bring with it a horizontal top! so the weight of modest rain/snow caused it to collapse and expose the bed to the elements. Hopefully my reinstated blue hoops and polythene will save the day.
Heres hoping that that is my lesson for this year, I think not.
