What does your chairman do for a living?

I am curious: what type of person willingly becomes a chairman of an allotment society? Around here, I know two policemen have done this job, plus a couple of councillors, one of whom could have self-abused for the nation if so required! Is your chairman an authority figure or just somebody who drew the short straw?

Our last chairman was retired and I don't know what he used to do before that. He was however, a figure of authority so it didn't really matter. He ruled with a rod of iron and a heart of gold for many years until his death in December 2005 at the age of around 80.
Our current chairman works for Royal Mail, but not as a postman. I've never really asked what he does so I will remedy this next time I see him. He'd been a letting secretary for some years prior to taking over when our Chairman died, so although yes, he did get the short straw, he was a natural successor.
One thing has to be said, at our AGM, which is attend by around 40% of our membership, there are NEVER any volunteers to act as committee members, or indeed, Chairman. I'm the secretary and we've only got new committee members by press ganging them in advance.

Our current chairman is me! I am a social worker, prior to that it was a chap that worked as a builder for the water company. My philosophy is 'minimal non -intervention' if it ain't broke don't fix it.

A lot of the lads, including the Secretary, used to work in Fords. The Chair is a retired Sister. She's firm but fair and I don't know where we'd be without her. She's a brilliant asset to the site, together with a lot of the committee members.
Lots of love

We don't have a chairman or a committee, everybody just seems to do as i tell them.

Kind Regards, Old Herbaceous.

Like Compo - our chairman is a Social Worker. He is fantastic, we couldn't do without him. So good at dealing with people and problems tactfully. Must be the training.
The Lottie is his way of 'switching off' and relaxinging from a very stressful job.
