I'm about to order a grapevine that I plan to train up my new pergola in my sheltered London garden (it'll get sun for about half the day). I'd ideally like to be able to eat the grapes - but don't mind if they're white or black. Anyone have any ideas as to the best variety?

Siegerriebe is a good one. It is early-ish and green. Not seedless, but very good 'musky' taste - not like anything you can buy in the shops. Ideally you will want 8 hours plus of sun during the growing season to fruit. Also, will needd to pinch back shoots regularly throughout season, as well as pruning in winter.

Brandt looks great in autumn, but is late fruiting (not that great - small, black and sweet).

Mr Edwards at Sunnybank Vines hods the national collection and is very knowledgeable and helpful. In my experience it's best to 'phone him rather than rely on e-mail.

thanks for that, I phoned him. What a lovely man. He recommended Aurore or Seneca for white and Joffre or Brandt for red. Must say I really like the idea of the autumn colour you get from Brandt so I'm leaning towards that one. Are the grapes really not that great, Mole?
