The weather is awful.
The soil (round here anyway) is axle grease with puddles.
More bad weather is forecast.

There are barely half a dozen posts on the entire forum.

What is everyone doing?

At this moment I am getting ready to go to bed. We have suffered too much from SAD this year.

Hi Peter,
I am sitting before my computer thoroughly Pi***d Off
because the river is out and I am on an island coupled with the fact that we have had a power cut all day and it came back just in time to see Judge Deed and just got to the last 10 minutes and the bloody power went again. It has just come back at 11.20pm.
When there is no power we have no water and until last year I would not have been able to cook but I now have a range with 5 gas hobs and electric oven thankfully I can at least cook.
Take note all you would be countryside dwellers when it's nice it's very very nice but it can be an absolute nightmare when things go wrong. So far this year this is the third time the river has flooded and I have had the telephone out of order due to high winds taking one of the posts down that holds my line and breaking it. God knows how many power cuts I've lost count.
I have promised to take somebody to Hereford leaving at 6.00am to catch the coach for Heathrow at 7.15am
and at present I shall be braving the flood using my tractor towing my car on a trailer and park up at a farm of a friend and continue in the car from there.
All in all I fear that I am an Unhappy Bunny.!!!

You have a tractor, they don't usually get phased by anything?
When astudent working one vacation on a farm I drove "my" International 2wd through a 100' square 4' high dung heap towing a trailer. Not sure why, to see if I could I think. :D

Besides, potential cash opportunity for you, you have a rope, yes?
Sit on tractor, drive up to stranded BMW X3, instruct its driver to attach rope and then sit in driving seat releasing brakes when you wave, you tow to dry land, accept cash, all without getting your feet wet :D . Well don't want your boots to slip on the controls do you?

Two alternative stratagies, one, drive a little too fast, a little too close and wash their car really thoroughly, two, just drive past looking smug and dry.

JB, I'm sorry for you. At least you must have had the telephone restored or you would not have been able to send your message. I think we are all suffering from SAD so let us hope for more sun and light from now on. My plan if there were a bad elecricity cut would be to fetch the generator from the farm but I would nor risk it on the computer. I bought another generator at half the price of theoriginal but that leaks oil so I must get that sorted which means finding the paperwork and guarantee. I have a 12 volt line throughout the house for emergency lighting, it needs a battery when funds permit.
I spent much time yesterday ordering seeds via the net, that's all done now.

Hi Allan,
Surprisingly I got the phone repaired the same day perhaps that was because the pole fell across the main road blocking it for quite a while.
With the floods they are a pest for instance I went to Flicks in the Sticks the other night just 2 miles from home and had to go home a rather circuitous route of almost 25 miles because the river came out whilst I enjoyed my film.
I have just been down to see if I can get through the flood and I will just about manage to get through. I will be in Hereford about 7am at the Bus Station.
JB.

Dear Peter, i was wondering exactly the same thing, i thought it would be quite busy on here in the winter months. :?
I suppose the old girls are busy making broth and darning socks, and their husbands are down the pub to get away from the nagging. :D
I bet Lizzie gets really grumpy this time of the year.

Johnboy i hope you had a safe journey.

Allan every dark day is one less, it will be spring before we know it, and then the long hard days of work will start again.

As you probably can see, there's one person that this time of year doesn't get down. :D

I am now at work now, and after asking last week if anyone knew the supplier of greenhouse plastic, forget it!! Yesterday the damn thing blew apart, looks like a train hit it, I might be able to salvage the roof and am thinking of building a more sturdy base out of timber and shiplap cladding, using the roof frame and then cladding it with rigid plastic, but first I have to pick up the glass and clear the site, but I cannot be sad about it, people died yesterday in this bad weather including a 2 year old girl, I cannot imagine how those people must feel, so I see my self as lucky.

Sounds as if you are all having absolutely frightful weather over there.
I even heard mention of a hurricane???? Horrible!

My first visit to the UK in the 1980's we were on top of Nottingham castle when we saw a tornado go past!!! If we didn't have the pictures to prove it, I would seriously doubt what I had seen.
It was quite scary, seeing peoples sheds etc. being sucked up into the funnel  .
We thought we were going to have to just wrap ourselves around the flagpole and hang on if it turned on to us.

Anyway, keep a grip on yourselves and everything you want to keep. I hope it all passes quickly and you soon have sunny weather. :)

I'm trying to do some writing while Seedling's taking a nap. Slowly getting back into it. Amazing how your brain seizes up with pregnancy and raising kids.

I'd love to get out and do something at the allotment but there has hardly been a let up between the winds, rain and snow. And of course when the sun does make a brief appearance, it's when I can't get away.
Welcome to Finland!!

Well it's absolutely beautiful here today, lovely sunshine, and been working with my shirt sleeves rolled up.
Can't wait to go back to work this afternoon. :D

Sorry to hear about your damage Compo.

Hi

Pleasant day too here on the Moray Firth. Sunny, cool and still in the morning. Bit cloudy in the afternoon. We have been sprared the terrible weather that has affected most of the country -I'm sorry for everyone who has been affected. Unfortunately I've not been spared the respiratory virus that is sweeping the UK and had to take most of the day off work. Felt a bit better by late afternoon and managed to clean the aging Humex propogator and fix a couple of bits with waterproof tape. (I'll be asking for advice on a new one soon.) Also began soaking some old Meteor pea seed to test their viability. If OK I'll be sowing inside in pots next week with a view to a later planting in the tunnel.

What am I doing now? I've avoided medcine all day - right now I'm having a gin and the symptoms are improving. Later I'll give Carole Klein's programme another go and try not to be too critical.

Digging up the odd leek and making marmalade. I have no heart to go and try to do anything else, as everything is red liquid mud. I want some nice COLD weather, preferably with deep frost and some snow (a) to kill the bugs (b) to warn the birds and fruit blossom not to get going too early (c) to provide some soulfood in the form of beautiful white views under sparkly blue sky.
Are we going to get this???
Mmmmm......... doubt it.
Alison.
