Drying fruit/veg in a slow cooker ?

Thinking about Chantal's post on food dehydrators made me wonder whether you could actually use a slow cooker for dehydrating/drying fruit and vegetables. Do you actually have to have liquid in them? Would they be damaged if used without liquid? I sadly own neither dehydrator nor slow cooker at the moment as any new piece of equipment would have to earn its keep in my overcrowded cupboards, but just wondered about the viability of using a slow cooker in this way.
