I;ve put this all around my blueberries - but there is a huge pile of trees in our local park that i;m sure can be put to use. Would xmas tree mulch be ok for say, raspberries, or anything else. Or is there anything that it definitely should not be used for? Many thanks! h.

I read somewhere recently that they make an excellent mulch for strawberries, being on the slightly acidic side as far as soil pH is concerned, and have the added bonus of the prickly needles deterring slugs and snails.

p.s. just located the source of this info - it was in an article written on various mulching techniques by Joyce Russell in another gardening mag.

Good to add to the compost heap from sackfuls kept for that purpose.

Weeds
Kitchen peelings etc
lawn mowings
Shredded christmas tree.
repeat ad nauseun.

Gives your compost some body.

Just remember that freshly chipped wood of any kind will starve the surrounding soil of nitrogen as the bacteria that break the wood down will use all available nitrogen it can find.

Best to compost for a year in my opinion. Remember also that (excuse the crudeness) if you pee onto your compost heap you will assist the process because the Urea will break down to Ammonia and eventually nitrogen
