I am looking out at the darkness and remembering the summer when the sun was already high at this time. Then I noticed that the next few mornings are the darkest and sunrise on Tuesday the 8th is a minute earlier

I must be getting old and foolish, because I go through this same process every winter. But it is great to feel everything is uphill from now on - well till mid-summer at any rate.

Dear Alan, i think it lifts everybodies spirits a little as we start getting longer days, so i wouldn't worry to much about the old and foolish bit.
Infact i quite enjoy being old and foolish, it's so more much fun.
