Cauliflower disaster

Our first attempt at cauliflowers has resulted in disaster. We left several plants, with small curds, for a weeks holiday. Upon our return, they had not grown but more importantly, had become badly discoloured and mostly soft. Inedible. Someone suggested they lacked protective leaves. Is a plastic protective cover a possibility? Advice please, for next year would be appreciated. Thanks

hello hancock!
your someone was referring to the practice of folding the inner leaves over the developing curds to keep the sun and rain off them. Just gently 'snap' the main leaf rib of a couple of the inner leaves, (don't break the leaves off, leave them attached!!!) and fold them over the curd. job done!! best of luck with next years crop!
