Last Saturday we took my father in law out in Herefordshire to Brockhampton manor house. It's a moated manor house and well worth a visit. I have never seen so many damsons hanging on so many trees. I asked who picked them and was told I could if I wanted and that they have picking weekends but they feared they were going over.We picked 15lbs and paid £4.50 for them and I made damson cheese. We could eat as many as we wanted. They were as sweet as the best plums.

Haven't made Damson cheese for years, although we did make some jam this year which came out very stiff but delicious. Particularly good on hot buttery crumpets. For some reason it seems to be regarded as a rather old fashioned fruit, but it my mind it makes one of the best jams from a flavour viewpoint.
