On the current Gardeners Questiontime (ex-24 September)there was report of a trial of tomatoes grown as cordons versus trained sideshoots. Go to Listen Again, Real player, play from time 34.5 minutes by the slider. I won't give all the details but the cordons had bigger fruit and were much earlier in fruiting. Varieties Ildi and Gardeners Delight.
