I was so disappointed by my new potatoes (they make a very nice mash!!!)

Which varieties did you grow and when did you plant and lift them? For me Maris Bard, Juliette, Charlotte and Pink Fir Apple have all done well this year as 'new' potatoes. Left longer the PFA are excellent boiled, Maris Bard producd very large potatoes which made excellent chips - but the chips from Charlotte lifted today were the best of all.

I grew Noisette, Red Duke of York and Pink Fir Apple. As new potatoes go, the Pink Fir Apples were far and away the best - buttery, firm and earthy. The Noisettes didn't taste of anything and the RDOY had a bitter skin that meant they weren't much use as new potatoes.

I grow Maris Bard for salad use here but I know what you mean when you say they make a large chipping Potato. The year that I was unwell they didn't get lifted until October and they came out beautifully clean and the crop was huge. Sadly I was forbidden to eat chips but they were cooked for the rest of the family and I did succumb to nicking the odd one or two. I now have Chips about once a month if that.
They also steam well and mash and roast so there is
not much more you could ask from a spud.
I was howled down on this forum for even suggesting them some while back because they are said to be a favourite with the slugs. Strangely I have grown them for years and never had the problem others seem to experience. How do you say. Did they attract all the slugs or what?

It was Swift but I plant them very late in late May as I got my allotment late and dig them up early this month. They were small and I got a bucket full of them but they don't taste very nice as salad potatoes it is why I did a mash with them and that was nice.

I grew 'Amandine' and 'Rosabelle' as well as 'Foremost' this year. The first two were impressive waxy salad potatoes with yellow flesh and we really enjoyed them. Rosabelle has an attractive red skin. 'Foremost' was disappointing - slow to bulk up and rather tasteless.
I agree with the others about 'Charlotte' - this is an excellent second early.
