One of my tomatoe plants has been very late in producing fruit but is now producing loads........ and I mean loads, probably around 30 plus of small tomatoes. What are the chances of them getting to harvestable size this late in the season?

Myrkk, you do not say if they are indoor or outdoor plants.

they are indoor, cordons in a south facing unheated greenhouse.

I always thought that day length helped the growing process though. Is that right?

If the weather stays reasonable sunny and your greenhouse is well sited and does not get too cold at night you may well enjoy tomatoes for a while yet.

Hopefully JB or Allan will give a better answer.

As prviously said on another thread I grow Gardeners Delight as Cordons for five trusses and then let the plants grow up into the roof of the greenhouse as a bushes. I have on several occaisions picked and eaten tomatoes on Christmas day and they are really sweet and juicy. I should just wait and see what happens and I feel that when they are ready you will get your tomatoes.

As reported elsewhere there is something funny going on with tomatoes this year. I have some tomato plants of normally sane varieties with some specimens having enormous fan-shaped trusses covered with late flowers, the tomatoes appearing on such trusses are tiny and will be far too late to be worth harvesting. My opinion is that what is hasppening this year is not typical behaviour.

Toms take 6 to 8 weeks to grow from 'set' to harvestable, therefore your toms may be ready by late October.

I generally clear out my toms during the October half-term holidays (Free labour ) However, I may well be leaving them this year until much later as I have a polytunnel for the first time

I guess it just depends when you get your first frost

Don't forget you can always make Green Tomato Chutney.
