Onion Drying

How do you dry your onions?
Mine were all spread out on the ground but with the heavy showers we keep having they weren't looking very good. Last night I rigged up some chicken wire over three of my full compost heaps and got about half of them on there to see if more air circulation helps. I haven't got anywhere under cover I can use. This year too many have grown bigger than I like but it would be a shame to not be able to keep them.

I laid mine one layer deep in those blue plastic stacking veg trays, and stacked them in skyscrapers in the greenhouse til dry, then strung them

Hi Geoff,
Ihave a frame only half as elaborate as yours which is only 6 inches off the ground made with chiken wire and I put upturned 2L plastic pots down the middle and spread a light Polythene cover over them and keep it inposition with chunks of rock on the upturned pots. Rusty as it now is it works a treat and good circulation of air is achieved and when I think they are dry I put them on the benches in one of my tunnels for a further period.

Someone gave me four plastic bakers trays and they are ideal for drying onions.
They stack easily and give sufficient room for adequate air circulation

This year i have tried a new way, i have laid six wooden pallets on the ground, laid netting on these and had a sheet ready for covering at night or if we are expecting a lot of rain. It really has worked well, with plenty of airflow getting underneath.
I'm sure there are many different ways, but as long as we all get a good end result' i'm sure we will all be happy.

Could someone explain the best way to tie onion up, I managed last year, but I know it wasn't the right way.

always found tying onions a real challenge. Now just bung 'em in nets. Have dried my onions on veranda on newspaper. They seem OK, and tis the only option I've got so they've got to be OK. If they've got lots of long strong leaves, I have just tied them with string to a big bit of string. Don't resemble any French stripy black beret'ed cyclist's fayre, but hey.
