An allotment neighbour brought some of his onions to show me this morning....he told me that a whole row of them had split/forked.
I haven't seen anything like this and certainly haven't a clue as to the cause....any ideas please

Hello Weed, sounds as if they have taken to much water on board as they were near the end of there growing season. This can make them split into two onions, they do look strange when this happens.
Kind regards Old Herbaceous.

Could well be OH but the split although even seems to be fresher rather than healed as I would have expected ...plus we have only just had the rain and the split is universal thoughout the bulb.(almost top to bottom)
David is not one to water his onions either.
I was wondering if the bulb had split to try and 'find' water
there I go complicating things again

The reason i said about to much water was because, i always grow a couple of rows of big onions, but the second year i grew them we had a long dry spell just before they had finished growing, so i watered them really heavily to try and get them a bit bigger, within a few days they had started splitting from top to bottom, and after a week they had divided into two onions.
But of course it could well be something else, we,ve had some strange veg on here already.
Weed i see your pretty handy with the old brick laying trowel.
A thousand bricks a day man maybe.
Kind regards Old Herbaceous.
