Sorry, had to share my enthusiasm as this is first Christmas I have contributed anything vegetative to the Christmas dinner - I harvested my parsnips and brussells sprouts this morning! Wahay!!!!
Hoping for even more next year.

Hi Maz & Wellie,
This is not an I can do better than you note but I've never failed with parsnips, or carrots with this method.
First place a pre-made 50cm high fleece barrier around the sowing area. Then make conicle holes at the required spacings for each veg type. Fill each hole with any gen multi compost to 2cm's from soil surface & water. I plant three seeds per station and cover with a further 1cm of same multi. Put a toilet roll tube around the the seeds at 5cm depth till plants are starting to fill tube (appears to stop nasties getting to young plants). Depending on the breadth of the hole you make depends on whether you have to thin. Plants will automatically push apart but won't fork and be as long as the hole you have made.
Sorry for being so longwinded but I couldn't explain it any quicker.
I have been growing vegetables organically for six years. In this time I have tried various experiments, some failures some successes. More than happy to pick other peoples' brains.
