I had to have my precious whippet Cass put to sleep this morning. I am absolutely devastated, she was twelve years old and the most affectionate dog you could ever meet. IT has come as a real shock as yesterday lunchtime she was playing like a puppy, but by the evening she started to look a little poorly, i stayed up with her all night and she was slowly getting worse. So i rushed her to the vets this morning, but she had been suffering from massive internal bleeding, so they advised me to have her put to sleep. That has to be the hardest descision i have ever had to make.
I went to work after i had buried her, just to try and take my mind off her, but i think it has made it worse, because when i got home i didn't get that wonderful welcome that i have had for the last twelve years. God i loved that dog.
If time is a good healer, please let it hurry up.

Kind regards a very tearful Old Herbaceous.

I'm a hard man with a soft collar.

I'm so sorry for your loss OH. Try and think of all the good times you've had with her. A couple of drinks and a damn good cry wouldn't hurt either :cry:

So sorry to hear of your loss OH. Dogs can be the best companions and I know how much I adore my own dog. Cass was obviously well loved by you and had a happy life as part of your pack. Remember the fun you had together. Take care .

Dear OH,
I am greatly saddened by your loss.
Don't be mournful dear friend celebrate the life of your dear much loved Cass instead. I can assure you it eases the pain. Think of all the things she got up to as a puppy and the places you have explored together it'll make you cry by that is part of the healing process for a broken heart.
Sincerely, Johnboy.

A few years ago my son Tom took his collie that he had had since he was 10 to be PTS. She was 14 so he was 24 and not a softie. He stood and cried. The vet was awful. She told him that he would mend his car. He didn't have a car. He had a dog who had shared his childhood and played football with him, who was desperately ill and whom he didn't want to see suffer.He went through exactly the same feelings as you, with the dog not welcoming him and we didn't see him for weeks because he couldn't face coming through the door and her not there.

I can't thankyou all enough for your kindest of replies, i have been trying my hardest to think of all the happiest of times Cass and i had together, and it really has helped.
Yesterday was very hard for me being at home and popping in and out all day, because she would never fail to greet me as if she hadn't seen me for a week.
Thankyou all for sharing this trouble with me, as i wanted to talk about it, but not with my freinds for fear of crying in front of them.
I still keep looking down on the floor as Cass always would lay on the floor beside me when i was on the computer.

Thanks again to my K.G.Family.

Kindest regards Old Herbaceous.

Dogs just do not live long enough. :cry:

In my mid forties, with my fourth dog.
The first collapsed at home some months after being diagnosed with liver cancer.
The second developed a hemotoma (internal bleed) in his ear, an operation removed that, but caused a heart problem, so my magnificent GSP looked like an unfit pensioners labrador and could not walk more then a dozen yards, so I had to make a visit much like yours OH. :cry: His portrait photo (eyeing up our hens) looks down on me as i type.
The third made a very good old age and then collapsed, same type of visit, same consulting room.
Current dog is now four and a half.

My sincerest sympathy OH, time is the only healer, remember her with love. :(

OH - it's good to remind us of these things. We had to put our first dog down (a Collie cross called Max) and it was awful. He was a fearless dog and totally loyal to Lyndon. We had 2 years without a dog and then we had a Springer called Hoover. She was a completely different personality, much more intelligent and happy to be in anyone's company. One day she went to sleep under my neighbour's Landrover and he reversed over her. I said I'd never have another dog because I couldn't bear the loss. We went 8 years without one and then we had a Brittany. She's now 5yrs and I can't imagine what it's going to be like without her. She's a Daddy's girl too.

If we ever needed a reminder to appreciate what you've got - you've reminded us OH.

Dear oh,I have only just read of your loss,I,m really sad for you. I have been in the same spot myself a few times,each time seems like the end of your world,I've cried like a baby each time.you loose your best mate. I have kept wippets myself and know what little beauties they are.Only time dulls the pain in the end.Kindest regards.

It was tickling my memory last night I have hunted it down.

Our great poet Rudyard Kipling wrote thus:

"Dinah in Heaven

She did not know that she was dead,
But, when the pang was o'er,
Sat down to wait her Master's tread
Upon the Golden Floor,

With ears full-cock and anxious eye
Impatiently resigned;
But ignorant that Paradise
Did not admit her kind.

Persons with Haloes, Harps, and Wings
Assembled and reproved;
Or talked to her of Heavenly things,
But Dinah never moved.

There was one step along the Stair
That led to Heaven's Gate;
And, till she heard it, her affair
Was--she explained--to wait.

And she explained with flattened ear,
Bared lip and milky tooth--
Storming against Ithuriel's Spear
That only proved her truth!

Sudden--far down the Bridge of Ghosts
That anxious spirits clomb--
She caught that step in all the hosts,
And knew that he had come.

She left them wondering what to do,
But not a doubt had she.
Swifter than her own squeal she flew
Across the Glassy Sea;

Flushing the Cherubs every where,
And skidding as she ran,
She refuged under Peter's Chair
And waited for her man.

. . . . . . .

There spoke a Spirit out of the press,
'Said:--"Have you any here
That saved a fool from drunkenness,
And a coward from his fear?

"That turned a soul from dark to day
When other help was vain;
That snatched it from Wanhope and made
A cur a man again?"

"Enter and look," said Peter then,
And set The Gate ajar.
"If know aught of women and men
I trow she is not far."

"Neither by virtue, speech nor art
Nor hope of grace to win;
But godless innocence of heart
That never heard of sin:

"Neither by beauty nor belief
Nor white example shown.
Something a wanton--more a thief--
But--most of all--mine own."

"Enter and look," said Peter then,
"And send you well to speed;
But, for all that I know of women and men
Your riddle is hard to read."

Then flew Dinah from under the Chair,
Into his arms she flew--
And licked his face from chin to hair
And Peter passed them through!

Cheers for thinking about me Peter, what a smashing verse. He was certainly a clever old boy with his words.
I'm feeling a lot better today, just got caught a couple of times by silly things.
I reckon i'll soon be back to my normal happy self soon.
I'm going to Norfolk for a long weekend, saturday, just to get away from things for a while. I go up to a little thathed cottage thats only quarter of a mile from the beach, so i can do a bit of walking and a bit of reading.

Kind regards Old Herbaceous.
