I have just started to harvest my Sturon onions from sets. I am reasonably pleased with the results but can any one tell me why i have got such a big variety of sizes, from some that are quite large and some that have not developed and are quite small and all sizes in between They are all planted in the same bed. Is there any reason for this.

I have had the same experience with this particular variety... the red variety adjacent to them are all uniform size

I am rather surprised that i have not had more replies from this posting. Is it not an interesting topic, or do most people manage to be able to grow all their onions to a uniform size?

No, my onions from sets sometimes grow to different sizes too. Things that will affect the size they grow to are the original size of the set, spacing between sets and watering, I imagine. I've always assumed the different sizes was caused by one or more of these variables, but I could be wrong.

My sturon from sets were fairly even but is that necesarilly a good thing. I dont always want a big onion and being able to select one of a size that fits its culinary purpose is great.
I grew a small patch of onions sown from seed in modules (several to a module)as well as traditional sets and the variety of sizes was brilliant, small ones to roast whole, medium ones for slicing etc and big ones to chop into soups etc.
