Are poppy seeds edible?

Having spent some time collecting a jar of seed from my opium poppies, can anyone reassure me that these are actually edible before I bake them in a cake?

It's okay. Just Googled it and I just have to be careful not to do any world class competitive sport in the next week or so. Apparently you test positive for opiates!

My mother had all my poppy seeds last year and baked them on her bread. She was fine...

Thanks Chantal. I'm putting 4oz in a poppy seed cake (when the butter softens), so it might actually make us feel pretty relaxed!
