They germinate so quickly and easily that its probably easier to sow directly.

thanks, they're for a friend so that's useful. Just one per module or a cluster like with beetroot?

I usually put 1 per module as germination is pretty reliable, but you could put 2 in and remove the weaker seedling.

I sowed mine directly in the ground and they came up no problem. In fact, they did too well - I was drowning under the things. Even for a complete novice like me they were no problem.

Dear Zena, you might be a complete novice, but a very nice novice.

I sow about 4 to a module and plant out when 3 or 4 true leaves per plant are well grown. All plants grow and I pick when half way between golfball and tennis ball size and eat without peeling them.

I know they germinate well, but hand sowing in rows tends to be too thick and need thinning which I consider a waste of seed.

Also sowing in modules means less bending and more control over the spacing in the rows.

I also have a Earthways seed drill which is good for direct sowing of large quantities.
I don't suffer from insanity .... I enjoy it!
