Just how tender are globe artichokes? Would very much like to plant some in the Spring (North Yorkshire) but read that they need a bit of TLC to get them through winter. Nicest looks like Vert de Leon but is it more tender? Any advice welcome.

i'm in midlands and left mine in ground last year, and grown back fine.
there were some fairly harsh frosts, magnolia copped it about 5 foot away from artichokes.
hope that may be of some help.

For the first year you should dig them up and put them in the greenhouse, then on just cut them back and cover the crowns with straw. After that I leave them out.
