As the dreaded white rot was threatening my garlic crop yet again, I decided to uplift my standard and elephant garlic. The standard garlic was not as bad as I anticipated but a bit on the small side, the elephant garlic however was magnificent. What interested me was that there were several “bulblets” around each elephant garlic cluster. What would I get if I planted these? Regards to all Allan (Doddy)

I looked this up online, as I have just found some bulbils surrounding my elephant garlic too!

"Bulbils - plant out as soon as they are ripe in late summer. The bulbils can be planted direct into their permanent positions, though you get better results if you pot them up and plant them out the following spring."

I haven't tried planting them, but did try to use them in cooking once.

I found my ones had very tough skins/coats. Once dried, they were virtually impossible to open up! Planting them seems a much better idea.

Thanks a lot for this topic everyone. This is the first year I have grown elephant garlic and I assumed that I could plant a row of them this autumn and see how they fared. But now I'll do that with half of them and pot up the rest - thanks for that tip, Deb - and overwinter them in the greenhouse. If I remember, i'll let you all know the results next summer.
