who's digging up my plum tree?

for the second time in two days I've woken up to find a large hole in the lawn by the side of my plum tree (planted in November). It's about 10 inches in diameter and 10 inches deep and so close to the tree you can see the roots. What could be doing it? And does anyone have any tips as to how I can stop it happening every night! I live in London and the only animals around are foxes, cats and my dog - but I'm 90 per cent sure it wasn't him...

the garden is walled and in a pretty urban area so I would be extremely surprised - unless they can climb six foot fences!

wire mesh layed round the tree should stop it.

Badgers can climb.....or dig under walls and fences.
