Cheap potatoe sacks?

Hi, does anyone know where the cheapest place to buy potatoe sacks is?
Prefereably by mail order, s I don't live near to big towns.

Hi there Skip!
You can get them from Thompson and Morgan by mail order. They were giving them away free with seed potato orders this spring. I don't think they are very expensive though.

If its the old fashioned hessian sacks that you're after I don't think that they are worth bothering with. The hessian rots very quickly if the sack gets at all damp and a rogue mouldy potato will also quickly rot a hole in it. Mice love tearing them up them for nesting material. A few years ago I got some from Marshalls and they were thin and poor quality. Paper sacks seem to be a much better bet. My local farm stores ('Countrywide') sells them quite cheaply.
Do remember that none of these types of sacks are light proof - you've still got to store your pots in a dark cool place however you've baggged them up.

Thanks for your replies - To be honest I'm not too fussed if they are hessian or not, just cheap & good to store them in ... never had to buy sacks before, as mum gets barley in paper bags so we always re-used them. But this year the barley has come in a woven plastic sack, & not sure if it'll be ok.
Just don't want to get caught out with not enough bags when we do dig the spuds -but seems daft buying sacks when we never have before.
Cheers for your help both of you, I'll compare Thompson & Morgan with the farmers store if they have them, I hadn't thought of them.

I use the fairly thick paper sacks that the bird seed / sunflower seeds / peanuts come in - I accumulate quite a few of those in a year. Ask around, you may find someone who feeds the birds.

Hi Skip,
I agree with John that the Hessian sacks are of poor quality and even let the light through with resulting green Potatoes. I use Potato Sacks and hereabouts they are £3.50./10 or £12.49./50.
Most Agricultural Merchants sell them but they are available Mail Order but that more than doubles the price.
