How do can you tell when gooseberries are ready for picking?

They are always ready for picking I think - all that changes is the size not the flavour - that is assuming you are cooking them. If they are for eating raw I think it will be trial and error until you recognise when your variety is sweet enough for your palate.

weve now got a day of light rain, which after the recent dry spell will probably mean all the gooseberries will start splitting on the bushes, so i guess its picking time as soon as they are dry

My "red" ones are ready when they turn from green to purply-red.
Trouble is the birds have colour vision.
