Snapped this beastie today, I am reliably informed this is the Caterpillar of the Mullein Moth. Stunning thing, about 2" long.
They turn into a rather drab moth:

Hello,
They're certainly stunning beasties...Great Mulleins and the caterpillars.
I would have answered the quiz too...as the Great Mulliein was the first plant I ever gardened..by moving some seedlings from my Grandmas to home...soon learned about the caterpillars too.
Don't think Mum really approved as she considers Mulleins a weed they having arived at Grandmas via a delivery of top soil and seeded everywhere...for years now though we have always allowed an odd one or two to stand in the garden.
All the best,
Clive.
