No idea Deb....but what does intrigue me is what that mop-like object above could be.
Shall be tuning in tomorrow for the answer. (the one to your question of course)

I was going to say foxglove again - obviously have them on the brain as well as attempting to take over the plot, but as per Chantal's comment I went out and compared to my verbascum and I guess I have to agree.

I think it looks like a verbascum too. Mine are all in flower at the moment. Is this a recent photo?
Old H - I love dahlias too (they remind me of my Granddad who grew some beautiful varieties in his greenhouse). I have quite a lot in a tub that I am really struggling to find space for in my garden. If you had been coming to our birthday bash you could have helped yourself!!!!! (Remember the coriander 
)

Dammitt! I was going to say verbascum before I looked at any of the replies (honest). It looks a bit primula-ish too, but maybe too big.

I love dahlias because when i was a lad the farmer just behind where i used to live, used to grow dahlias for showing all over the country.
He was that good at it, he often used to beat the professional growers.
When i was twelve he was going away for a week and asked me if i would disbud them for him, to which i agreed, so he showed me what i had to do.
But the first night i went round to do them, you couldn't believe how nervous i was. He had about a hundred plants, an i kept thinking, if i cock this up he is gong to lose all his prize winning blooms.
He was well pleased when he got back, so i must have got it right.
The old chap is dead now but i can stiil see those dinner plate sized dahlias.

It is a variegated Verbascum (well done Chantal, Piglette & Jude!!), the photo was taken last year, and the leaves were variegated right from the first true leaves. The strange thing is, it didn't flower last year, and this year the leaves are completely green and it's flowering! I'm sure someone can explain that?
As for the strange 'mop like ' structure at the top and left of the photo, if you look carefully, you can just see a wooden webbed foot; it's part of a couple of wooden ducks my kids bought me as a Mother's Day pressie, the 'mop' bit is the remains of the witches broom type protrusions that were part of the tree they were carved from! Perhaps that should have been the mystery photo, would have kept you all going for ages!
