Hello all
Any tips on Roma tomatoes
Do they need staking or pinching or do side shoots need to be removed? Or just let 'em go
The other types we are growing Christmas grapes (cherry tomato)and Moneymaker which we are removing sideshoots and staking, we have grown for years with great success but this is the first year for Roma.
We have some in the greenhouse and some in the ground.

Hi Mike,my roma are outside and in theory I grow them as cordons to about 3 trusses but in practice they very often get away from me and put out sideshoots.If they get as far as a truss then I just pinch out just after it.I don't want more than 5 trusses to a plant as I find they don't all ripen well so I get ruthless with them when I think they're carrying enough and whip off tops and shoots alike.

Let them roam...!

You've got Roma - and you should let them !
They are incredibly unruly, but very productive, and we 'semi dried' them in the oven to remove most of their moisture, and then froze them.
By nature, they are very bushy and you should just let them do that. Bush out. Don't pinch. Don't train. Don't bother. They're fantastic !

And when you've done Roma, try 'Romano' (search TKG on Peter Surridge page, if not, get back to me and I'll look it up) They're the cordon version of Roma, and I'm here to tell you, they're looking fabulous right now.
