When to plant apple trees?

Very simply, which is the best month on average to plant apple trees please? RSVP.
For bare root apple trees I think the answer is any month when the trees are dormant and the soil conditions are suitable. October to December being the ideal months but I have planted later than December with good results but have never planted before October.
