Hello Ferret,

Most good long established local garden machinery dealers/repairers should be able to set you up with belts for the Merry Tiller range....whether that be with a genuine original or a standard type "A" section V belt (which could also be obtained from a local engineering supplier).

I checked a couple of months back and was told by our local Qualcast/Atco Service Agent that most original belts were still available.

A standard type V belt will doubtless be cheaper but a genuine example will be the correct material to better withstand use as a clutch.

A local Qualcast/Atco service agent can be found by visiting www.qualcast.co.uk or www.atco.co.uk then look under Owners, then the Service Agent postcode locator to find your local agent. Qualcast/Atco took on Wolseley Webb garden machinery in C.1984... but it will be the local agents knowledge that you will be drawing on, so I hope you can find one that has been long established.

The Merry Tiller range has been on the go in UK from the late 50s/60s right up to the early 90s and during that time there have been several distinct design types on which they re-used the same model names.

I believe one regular belt size that crops up could be A48 while on some 2 speed machines A41 will be the alternative second belt.

I seem to have A46 to mind also...but haven't been asked lately so have forgotten..??!!

There are a few places online were various types of MT manuals can be downloaded..
http://www.allotment.org.uk/assets/merr ... manual.PDF

Also Roger Stocks has a website that has info' on a 1970s/80s.?? Titan model and also on the very last design type that was sold from c.1984 'til the end in the early 1990s. http://merrytiller.dyndns.org/

Both links have the manuals as .pdf files requiring Adobe Acrobat or similar to open.

Hope some of this helps,

All the best,
Clive.
Richard

As Clive states there are several models of Merry Tiller. The early Major used an A48 belt but later (post1978) ones had different pulleys so probably used different belts. You need to know what model you have. I hope to have a Merry Tiller website up and running in April merrytiller.co.uk

Hello Richard,

Good to read your posting..

I did wonder, as I typed earlier, how your MT project was progressing...

I look forward to seeing the website up and running.

All the best,
Clive.

I had some problems sorting a belt for the merry tiller I was given (it's probably 40 years old!). The local garden machinery place was helpful and sent me away with a belt and the instruction to bring it back if it didn't fit - needless to say it didn't, so I swapped for a second, and that didn't fit either. As it was slightly too long and I was keen to get started I simply moved the engine about an inch further forward and drilled four new holes in the frame. The machine has been running happily for a while now, although I can't remember the size of the belt I'm afraid !
The best advice I can offer is to take the machine to the shop and try out the belts they have. If this isn't possible you're down for a few trips back and forth with different belts to try !
