I'm new to this forum so forgive me if the question had already been raised. I can probably get hold of wood chip from a local tree surgeon, can I use it as mulch on my allotment ?

I use it, find it really useful for weed suppression in between rows of potatoes.
Choice is use it fresh, or let it rot down a bit.
I go for letting it rot a bit, mostly because unless I shred my own trimmings, it's already got going and the heap is hot inside.
Watch out for clouds of fungal spores from dry decomposing woodchip, if it's leafy when chipped it'll get going pretty fast.
I don't cover my stash, I let the rain get to it.

Thanks Peter, I've heard conflicting information, it's good to hear first hand knowledge.

Don't use leylandii chippings on borders, only on paths.
