earthing up potatoes

Hi
I'm not having much luck with my potatoes this year. I used grass cuttings to earth up my potatoes that I've grown in raised beds as advised by Monty Dom. However I've just checked them and the grass cuttings at the bottom around the potato plants seem to have gone very wet and mouldy. At the moment the plants are looking very healthy but will this rot the potato plants? Should I remove it and replace it with something else?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Best wishes
