Blue Bins on the allotment

Why? Where do they come from? Who put them there? What was in them before?
I'm not complaining - they are very useful, and I inherited one when I took on my plot. It's just that they seem to be on every allotment I see - from the road, from trains, photoes on the internet. My personal belief is that they have been planted (forgive the pun) by some alien life force, and David Tennant will be arriving on a plot near you very soon to investigate.

They are used for importing concentrated frozen orange juice and so on, and there are several companies that sell them very cheap and of course because they are 'food safe' they are 'water for the allotment safe' :D

Beccy, That's what They want you to believe, that they're orange juice containers, but it sounds far too plausible an explanation to me.
Jopsy, I'm with you on Mr Tenannt.

Mine came from a local timber / recycling yard, if used to contain aircraft de-icer but came with a certified clean certificate, cost me a fiver, got several linked up as water butts, you can cut the lid off with an ordinary saw and buy a water butt tap from good hardware shops.

Forgive me but are we talking about Bins or Drums?

You must have a lid or cover of some sort if you don't want it to go smelly and horrible, about 90% light exclusion is OK.

I've got two that were given to me when I took on my plot. Jim (OH) sawed the lids off for me then drilled large/ish holes in the middles. Then I inverted the lids and put bricks on top to stop them blowing off - it's amazing just how much rainwater can be collected from such a small surface area.
Now that I've got a shed I plan to convert them to proper water butts but I'll still keep the lids on 'cos it definitely does keep the water 'sweet'.

Chantal, You don't get them from anywhere, they just appear, mysteriously from nowhere!

They are really blue mushrooms and they appear overnight in the corner of fields after a spell of warm rain in the early autumn!
