Can anybody tell me why I suddenly have to fill in my user name and password every time I want to access the forum, or whenever i'm notified somebody has posted a response?

Have the administrators changed something or have I just suddenly done something wrong to trigger this? And if so, how do I put it right please ?

Put a tick jn the remember me box.
Other option is you've started getting rid of cookies?

Yes, I've ticked Remember me.
Possibly have accidentally stopped getting rid of cookies on my iPad but not a techie i'm m afraid so have no idea how to restore them

Primrose, they restore themselves.
This is controlled by your browser and in the settings there will be options about retaining or deleteing history, cookies and such like.
