Wildlife pond

You have to be a very ewrly riser to catch a heron OH. One of them cleared my mini pond of half a dozen mating frogs in seconds one year. I covered the pond with some expanding whisker trellis after that but by then aI think most of my frog stock in the garden had been killed off.
I had no frogspawn last year for the first time, snd no signs of any this year.

I used to love coming across all the baby frogs in the veg patch when I was weeding. It was less fun mowing the lawn. i used to have to do a frog inspection first to avoid chopping up any of the tiny creatures in the mower blades. I suspect a fair number sadly meet their fate in gardens this way.- the smallest ones are little larger than the size of a thumb nail and so easy to miss.

A corner of the wildlife pond, quite a lot of new growth and even more old leaves, but each time I net the leaves out I keep catching Smooth Newts, so I am "leaving" them alone( did you see what I did there, nearly a joke...............nearly).

How is your pond doing now? Thinking about how to redo ours over the winter

I think winter pond maintenance is going to get later every year with global warming as you can't really have a good clean up until any nearby leaves have fallen and that date is continually being pushed back.

The pond is shutting down for winter now, all I do is remove some of the floating tree leaves from the surface with a net, I don't disturb the underwater world now until springtime to let nature do it's thing.
