Thanks Sally.
The books say wait until the coldest weather (which is in Jan/Feb as far as I am concerned) and by then the crowns are as you see.
Let us hope I can get it done between the downpours! (at least the soil will be soft!)

Done. No stems broken off. Manure piled carefully around.
Let us hope that less sun helps it and being in what should be damper ground (the original spot was S facing and beside a row of leylandii (about 20ft high - was at least 30 but has been cut back)
