Anybody heard of putting a whole egg in bottom of hole then tomato plant on top?

I suppose somebody local suggested that - N4N.

I have no idea. What advantages is it supposed to have for the tomato plant? I'm curious now, this seems very unusual to me.

Could cause disease when rotting and might encourage rats, never heard of it and I wouldn't try it either.

The idea is from a lady across the pond.

Tomato is planted 12 inches deep so well away from rats, been said eggs are full of nutrients, egg shell is calcium.

Heard about banana skins or full banana's planted under Tom's, even full fish heads in the hole. None are going on my plot as we have too many chicken keepers & way too many rats!

I've heard it countless times about banana peels! They are also rich in calcium and perfect to mix through compost. Egg shells are indeed full of calcium too, but a whole egg? Never heard that one before...

I'll have to suggest it to the neighbours. They are away on holiday and I am looking after their hens but sales seem to have dried up so they are going to come back to three dozen eggs. By the way, is it whole or broken?
