I've recently read an article in the newspaper that all windfalls should be cleared up and disposed of to avoid spreading disease etc.

What a waste. I put the mummified shrivelled ones in the bin. The badly bruised ones go in the compost. Undamaged ones go into cider and I put the rest in piles under the small shrubs in the border for the blackbirds and wildlife.

I rescued the best that could have the bruised bit cut out & left the rest for the birds & critters - read the wasps found them also! I tended to avoid the area for a bit when they were very lively. What was left was pretty much mush & went on the compost. I'm not sure as have read the same thing about clearing it up.

Wonder what diseases could be spread & do they mean spread to the other trees while on the ground or something that will survive the compost process?
