Why do I have to log in to access this forum?

I used to be able to access this forum without logging on - now I can't. Just wondering what the reason was for the change in access rights.

Hello John
When you log in do you tick the small box below username and password called 'log me on automatically each visit'? If you do this, somehow the forum seems to recognise your computer and you get straight into forum whenever you return.

Thanks for the reply. I can understand the need to log onto a forum to post messages but not for reading them. Especially for such an important forum as "seasonal tips" as there is alot of useful advice present that I used to read until it recently disappeared from the menu. If I hadn't wanted to post a question about spuds I wouldn't have registered and wouldn't have known "seasonal tips" still existed. Ah, well - never mind I can access it again now. But it seems a shame that there is a need to penalise those who are infrequent users of the site - I suppose that it is, by far, the lesser of the two evils.

Firstly, I've moved this topic from Best Practice as it was really in the wrong place; I hope you don't mind.
Secondly, I'm a bit puzzled by what you say. As a guest you should be able to view any of the topics, you should be able to read but not write. I'll ask Mr PH about this and hopefully he'll post an answer for you.

I've noticed the same thing - it allows you to read everything EXCEPT 'Seasonal Tips' without logging in!

Not quite sure why the seasonal tips had hidden itself to guests... perhaps it's a seasonally affective disorder
Anyway, all guests should now be able to see all sections of the forum, except the Suttons Seed Trial Forum.

the reason it can recognise you and log you in automatially is it puts a'cookie' on your hard disk. Harmless in this context and valuable but some people regularly delete them as a security precaution.
If you ever do that you'll have to log in again the next time.
