Mrs S and I took a break up in the North East of England for a few days, visited Beamish Museum, Farne Islands and on our way back we called into RHS Harlow Carr, Harrogate. All most enjoyable places to visit.
What I did notice at Harlow Carr was that in common with RHS Wisley all the vegetables were being grown in raised beds, not very high though, only raised about 6 inches.
There was also a lot of 'mixed bed' growing of vegetable , annual & perennial plants to give people the idea that they could possibly fit some veg into their own gardens I suppose.
However, seems RHS staff may not always get it right. There was quite a large bed which had been solely devoted to trying to grow a big heavy pumpkin.
It had been set up with drip hoses which were connected to a large canister containing liquid feed. The ideal set up .............................................................................................................................................

Half the bed was empty as the plants had been removed, those pumpkins that were still growing all, without exception, had leaves which were yellow around the edges and green in the middle. Imagine a large sunflower.
I asked staff if this was due to a magnesium deficiency. The reply was "we don't know what has caused it, we are sending the soil for analysis"
Nice to know we are not the only ones who sometimes do not know answers.

Also find the gardener's at these larger gardens always hedge any questions you ask. As much as I like looking at the big boys gardens I also like to find their smaller cousins with volunteers who are happy to chat & advise!
