Hi everyone
Just joined the forum ~ tho' I've been an avid Kitchen Garden reader since getting my allotment in February 2015.
I'm Gill, 49 years young and been mad about gardening since I could follow my dad around the garden. He even gave me my own little corner in which to grow a few hardy annuals like candytuft, nasturtiums, Virginia Stock and french marigolds....all of which I still grow every year

Wherever I've lived I've always grown flowers but it's only since I got my allotment two years ago that I've developed an interest in edibles. And now they are slowly taking over!!! The first year was a huge learning curve with a couple of disasters but more successes...but last summer was a nightmare

Plague and pestilence descended upon my plot and, I must admit, it did knock my confidence a tad. I even considered just going back to growing only flowers but over the past couple of months I've started to look forward to having another shot at vegetables and fruit
Anyway, looking forward to meeting you all and picking up loads of new gardening tips.

They are the ones who specialise in vines.

Good evening Gill, and a very warm welcome from me too.....nice to get a little description of what you know and what you have tried. Last year was a the most awful year for vegetable growing, most of us struggled with one veg or the other, so glad you are going to give it another go. Like a lot of us long term vegs growers on here, we are still learning things after many years.
So this forum is brilliant for the novice and the more experienced gardener alike and a very friendly bunch as well...

Thanks for the lovely welcome everyone
Last year WAS a stinker oldherbaceous

Tatties and tomatoes got blight, melons and cucumbers rotted away (possibly me watering them wrong?) and my neighbour's ornamental pigeons descended upon my peas and beans!!!

Oh, and what was left got nobbled by the slugs!!!

You have to laugh or you'd cry....or go insane!!!
Shifted a few small shrubs today as I want the top end of the plot for my veggies as it's in full sun. Bottom end still gets the sun too - I'm putting flowers there this year as hubby Neil is building me a new greenhouse. We got a frame last week from the scrapman and Neil is going to support it with a wooden frame and cover it with polythene.

Welcome to the forum Gilly!
Good to hear you're forging on despite the challenges of last year - it was a bit of a brute weather wise, and blight was a nightmare. We were all on here seeking advice & licking our wounds. Just ask any question that pops in your mind, don't ever be shy & post your pics! Oh and forgive our knack of going off the topic - it's a talent indeed, but we do try to keep that on General Chatter and straight answers on the other topics.

Hello, Gilly, and welcome! Yes, successful gardening is not an easy task and there will be ups and downs every year, but once you get to know your plot, the ups prevail! The folk on this forum are certainly very helpful, you will find.

Gilli. Welcome. You will find one or two of us are a bit strange. But we don't bite. Wish you a good growing season.

Welcome.....it's a new year and who knows how we'll all fare...and what will grow and what will succumb to beasties and bugs. That's what makes it all so interesting.
