Why isn't Ailsa Craig available as onion sets.

Went to a quiz night once and a question in the gardening section was "what is Ailsa Craig a variety of?". How many do you know, they only had one.
Sorry, don't know about the sets.

my guess would be its not popular enough for the set growers to make a good profit. Sad really, I've decided after this year to go back to sets, and I wont get anything like the same variaty as I'm growing this year... But I'll get more than the 1 or 2 of each type that will actually survive my neglect...

Hi Geoff,
Well one of the finest of all Tomatoes is called Ailsa Craig and I would think in its time better known than the Onion of the same name.
As regards the Onion as sets Ithink that conditioning was carried out out by the Dutch and originally only Dutch varieties were used and although now you can get other non Dutch varieties by this time Ailsa Craig has dropped from gardening fashion. Ailsa Craig is a very good onion because it was known as the housewifes favourite because the were very even in size and easy to handle.
