So, what's the best thing you've ever dug up on the allotment? Here's a selection of my finest treasure - nice old glass bead today.

Lets see, bed things I've dug up...
On my grandads plot, Las year i dug up a cigarette tin, inscribed "sgt C. Denver" we assume it was from a previous occupant during WW2, presumably sgt Denver or his widow lived there. (its now in his local museum)

On my parents home plot... My mums wedding ring, which shed lost a few years before

And on my plot, an old gnome lol. The fishing rod was the only thing broken on it

I've dug up nothing like that hoard, but liked the few odd things I have found, like the old rusty padlock & bits of china. Every year at this time I find more, as I clear the plastic off the sleeping beds & give them a little turn over! Just wish just those things would come up to the top & not every rock as well!

Strangest thing I found while turning farmyard and field into garden was a buried length of railway line. Apart from that just the odd little bottle and clay pipes ignoring the scrap metal like bits of corrugated and the worst sort, buried chicken wire.

Because I do all my digging (rather than rotivater) I get to have a good sort through. Westi - also love all the bits of China and clay pipes. Have thought about making a mosaic ... But I'm not that arty.

Our allotments use to be part of the Broadlands estate so I'm hoping Lord Mount Batten dropping some change out of his pockets along the way, or maybe some Royal jewels !

Hi Peter, it's an old pre acrilic button - quite heavy, maybe Bakelite? It has a metal eye/hoop. No jewels unfortunately but very pretty. But nothing like you see on modern clothing, and very tactile . Maybe 1950s - very stylish.

I was wondering if it was carved jet?

It would be lovely if it was, but looks a bit too man made. Also heats up when held - I think jet is quite cold (could be wrong).

I'm afraid that I have uncovered mostly rubbish, bricks, bits of plastic and such like. As our plots were established in October 1914, I am suprised to find rubbish, one thinks better of allotment holders. Likewise, I would have thought that pretty much every square inch would have been dug over, so little would be left, particularly in the traditional digging regimes.
